Personalized algorithms use your CRM data to recommend a ranked list of products or offers to each user. They work like Bring Your Own Logic algorithms, but the logic is centered on the user instead of on a product.
For example:
- A card issuer shows different benefits to different cardholders
- A merchant promotes different products to customers based on segmentation that the merchant already holds
After you create a personalized algorithm, you can reuse it across recommendation campaigns and experiences.
→ Contact your account team to make sure you have the necessary permissions for this feature
How it works
A personalized algorithm pairs a list of SKUs with a user ID. When that user visits, they see their own list of products or offers, in the order you defined. Because the list is ranked, you control which items appear first for each user.
To create a personalized algorithm, you:
- Prepare a CRM feed file
- Create the feed source in Audience Manager
- Apply the algorithm to a strategy
Step 1: Prepare the CRM file
Your CRM CSV file includes a user identifier and a column with the ranked SKUs for each user. The order of the SKUs in the list matters.
| Column | Description | Values format |
|---|---|---|
| First column | User identifier | Hashed email or customer ID |
| Second column | Ranked SKU list for the user. The name of this column defines the name of your algorithm, for example, Personalized. | Products ordered by priority, separated by pipes |
→ To create more than one algorithm, add more SKU columns to the same file and give each column a unique name.
Step 2: Create the algorithm source in Audience Manager
Define and upload the CRM feed for the algorithm. You can use the Schema Creator for this.
-
Define the feed source:
- In Experience OS, go to Audience Manager › Extensions.
- Under Profile, click Add Source to add the CRM feed.
- Name the source Personalized Algorithm. The source name must match exactly.
- Define the feed source: Either via API (provide an API key) or upload your CSV file.
-
Create the schema:
You can use the Dynamic Yield User Data Schema Creator or supply your own code. If you use the schema creator:- Add the name of your algorithm (the column name) and set its type to Text Array.
- Add as many algorithms as needed (as many column names as you included in your file).
Copy your schema and paste it into the Data Schema field in the feed editor.
Make sure you've defined your User Unique Identifier, and then save.
Step 3: Apply a personalized algorithm to a strategy
After you define the algorithm in the schema, it appears in the algorithm selector when you create or edit a strategy. You can attach it to any strategy and reuse it across campaigns.
- In Experience OS, go to Assets › Strategies, and create a new strategy.
- From the algorithm selector, select your personalized algorithm.
- When you're done configuring the strategy, click Save.
Notes:
- Only columns defined as text arrays in the CRM schema appear as algorithms
- The algorithm appears in the selector after you add the column to the schema, even before you upload the CRM file
- The order of the SKUs in the list determines the order in which they are shown to each user
