Use merchandising controls to decide which products Shopping Muse prioritizes, demotes, or excludes.
Shopping Muse retrieves products using Semantic Search, so the merchandising rules you set affect the products retrieved for every shopper request. Common use cases include promoting new arrivals, demoting low-stock products, or excluding specific products from recommendations.
Set up merchandising controls
- In Shopping Muse, go to Customize Agent › Background Knowledge › Experience Search, and click Manage. The Merchandising Controls tab opens.
-
In the Merchandising Controls tab, add the rules you need:
- Boost & Bury: Click Add, and select a product attribute or an Algorithm Studio algorithm. Use the slider to set how strongly matching products are promoted or demoted.
-
Filters: Click Add, enter a name for the rule, and select a rule type:
- Only Include / Exclude: Select a product feed column and the values to include or exclude.
- Pin: Select a product by name or SKU, and select its position.
- Click Apply Changes.
Your changes are saved as a draft, and a Draft label appears next to Manage. Test your changes in the Playground before publishing them. - Click Publish to make your changes live.
For more information about configuring these rules, see Boost & Bury and Filters in Creating Semantic Search Campaigns.
Note: If your Dynamic Yield account team previously configured product filters for your Shopping Muse, you can find them in the Merchandising Controls tab.
How merchandising controls work
Keep the following in mind when configuring your rules:
- Rules apply to every request: Merchandising controls aren't tied to specific shopper queries.
- Shopping Muse still considers the conversation context: Your rules affect which products Shopping Muse considers first. Shopping Muse then recommends the products that best match the shopper's request, so conversation context can override prioritization rules.
- Exclude removes products; Bury demotes them: An excluded product isn't recommended. A buried product can still appear when it's highly relevant to the shopper's request.
- Pin rules take precedence: Pin rules take precedence over include and exclude rules. If a product is both excluded and pinned, the Pin rule takes precedence.
- Start with a low boost: When many products match a boosted value, even a low boost strength can fill the recommendations with those products. Test the effect in the Playground before publishing.
- Stock and global rules are already applied: Shopping Muse recommends only in-stock products, so you don't need to create an availability filter. Global rules defined for your account continue to apply.
If you also use Experience Search
Shopping Muse merchandising controls are managed through Experience Search.
In Customize Agent › Background Knowledge › Experience Search, click Manage to open Experience Search. Then go to Semantic Search › Edit, and edit the variation of the default experience.
Shopping Muse uses the rules defined in the default experience of your Semantic Search campaign. This means that the merchandising rules in the default experience apply to both your site search and Shopping Muse.
For more information about the default experience, see Before you start: Define a default search experience variation in Creating Semantic Search Campaigns.
